you know what makes a good manager?

someone who doesn’t draw a line between themselves and the associates, who goes in and really assesses the issues that are brought to them or that they catch and doesn’t just yell for someone to ‘fix it and fix it now’. someone who treats their employees with the basic respect that people should be given, and allows themselves to be silly and random when the time is correct for it while also being able to take full control of a situation and be a real leader when needed. a good manager isn’t someone who hides in their back office doing ‘paperwork’ or making ‘phonecalls’ for their entire shift; yes, those are part of the job, but not the entirety of it. a good manager isn’t someone who belittles or condescends their (adult) employees; they offer constructive criticism and guidance when an employee needs it. a good manager isn’t someone who creates more problems than they solve; they work with their employees to solve all of the problems, no matter how small they might seem.

i’ve only had one truly outstanding manager in the six years i’ve worked in retail, and i hope every day that someday, somehow, every manager will start to act a little more like him.

because then everyone’s jobs would suck about 67% less.
